Every touch -- almost all from good to very impressive -- that midfielder Gedion Zelalem took in the U.S. U-20s' 4-0 win over New Zealand, was collected in this 8-minute video by TerryAFC. Besides the assist, nutmeg and rabona, notable is the way Zelalem spins away Xavi-like from foes.
I know he is young and we tend to over hype, but this dude can play. I haven't seen too many US players with his creativity and skill level at any age. Let's see how he develops over the next few years...
It's what he does for the rest of the team that is so impressive. It's like figuring out how to play with a new toy. His thru balls at :36, 5:03 and 7:21, make the selfless play contagious, see return thru ball at 6:43. The rest of the team is still figuring it out--standing on top of each other (1:36, 4:05), poor touch (5:55), where's the overlap (3:51) and some static standing around at the top of the 18. Who takes a free kick backwards (2:23)? This must drive the Direct Play people nuts. His conservation of energy and the ball (6:24) in the defensive 3rd will make every long-ball defender feel inadequate if they launch forward just to turn the ball over. He's special because his mind is working overdrive while his body conserves energy and maintains possession of the ball. He's the complete opposite of almost all other players here, who are mostly headless chickens full of energy but not wit nor awareness.
Too bad this wonderful video paying tribute to a very skillfull player was accompanied by rapp filled with obcenity and disgusting lyrics. I am surprised that this was allowed. Very disgusting.
