FIFA on Thursday confirmed that it paid the Republic of Ireland’s soccer federation (FAI) $7 million following Thierry Henry's handball and the subsequent goal scored by William Gallas which sent France to the 2010 World Cup and sent Ireland home. Details of the deal were disclosed by FAI chief John Delaney in an interview with RTE Radio 1 on Thursday. "We came to an agreement,” Delaney said. “That was a Thursday and on Monday, the agreement was all signed and all done. It was a payment to the association to not proceed with a legal case." FIFA later issued a statement explaining that this was a loan that Ireland would have repaid if it qualified for the 2014 World Cup. Since it did not, FIFA wrote off the loan at the end of last year.
