WWC Today: What's at stake on Tuesday

As expected, Canada and Germany won their groups at the Women's World Cup and are joined by China and Norway in the final 16 of the expanded second round. A late goal by Kirsten van de Ven, formerly of Quinnipiac and Florida State, gave the Netherlands a 1-1 tie with Canada that revived Dutch hopes of reaching the second round. For what's at stake on Wednesday ...

The USA will win Group D with a victory over Nigeria on Tuesday in Vancouver. It can also win the group by any number of other scenarios, including a one-goal loss to Nigeria as long as the Australia-Sweden game ends in a tie. Nigeria will need to win by two goals to stay alive. Australia will advance with a win or tie, while Sweden needs to win to be assured of reaching the round of 16. Only a three-goal loss to Nigeria and an improbable set of results in the other matches would send the USA home early.

Japan, which plays Ecuador, has already clinched no worse than second place in Group C with wins over Switzerland and Cameroon, which both beat up on the hapless Tri Femenina. A Switzerland-Cameroon tie will send both teams to the second round. The underdog Lionnes Indomptables will be in good shape to advance with anything but a heavy defeat.

No comments at all on how the New Zealand team was robbed? The Kiwis only lost their opener by one goal. They held the hosts Canada in the second match only to have a 2-2 draw with a not so convincing China. Finishing last in their group, they now head out and home. But it is completely injust. That first China goal, a penalty kick, resulted from an alleged handball by a New Zealand player. Except the ball obviously struck her in her stomach. Yes, stomach. It was not so difficult to see. This injustice is quite a price for the Kiwis to pay. And it shows how poor the match referee and the linesman closest are. They too need to be departing the tournament due to inability to see the obvious. China had nothing at all going prior to being gifted that penalty kick.
