NWSL Roundup: Two Super Falcons, one Matilda signed

Play resumes in the NWSL after taking a week off for the Women's World Cup. It begins Friday with a meeting of the last two champions, FC Kansas City and Portland at Providence Park.

Players from the USA, Canada and Australia -- 37 in all -- are still playing in the World Cup, but players from eliminated teams like Mexico, New Zealand and Nigeria will be returning.

During the break, two Super Falcons signed with NWSL teams.

The Western New York Flash has come to terms with Nigerian midfielder Halimatu Ayinde, while the Washington Spirit announced today the club has signed Nigerian defender Josephine Chukwunonye. Ayinde played 220 minutes in three games for Nigeria, while Chukwunonye played every minute for the Falcons in their three matches in Canada.

The Spirit also signed 20-year-old Australian forward Hayley Raso, who is with the Matildas at the World Cup but has yet to see action.

Returning are four players for Mexico -- Boston defender Bianca Sierra, Sky Blue FC forward Monica Ocampo, Washington midfielder Veronica Perez and defender Arianna Romero -- plus Chicago Red Stars defender Abby Erceg (New Zealand) and Washington Spirit forward Francisca Ordega (Nigeria).
