Despite away wins against the Netherlands and Germany last month, the U.S. men’s national team actually fell seven places in the latest FIFA rankings released by soccer’s worldgoverning body on Thursday to No. 34. How is this possible, you ask? As NBC Sports points out, the USA’s international friendly wins count for far less in FIFA’s ranking scheme thancompetitive matches, which means that Concacaf teams had a distinct disadvantage compared to South American and European nations participating in the Copa America and Euro 2016 qualifying last month. It follows, then, that the USA and other Concacaf teams will move up with a strong showing at the Gold Cup.
