USA-Cuba Gold Cup Player Ratings

July 18 in Baltimore
USA 6 Cuba 0. Goals: Dempsey 4, 63 pen., 77, Zardes 15, Johannsson 32, Gonzalez 45.
Clint Dempsey scored a hat trick as the USA earned a Gold Cup semifinal spot by cruising past Cuba, 6-0.

5 Brad Guzan (Aston Villa/ENG) 35/0.
Spent this game as a spectator -- besides coming off his line to snag a through ball in the 50th minute.

6 Tim Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt/GER) 25/1.
Right back delivered the fine cross for Dempsey to head home the USA’s fourth-minute opening goal.

7 Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles Galaxy) 27/1.
Central defender hit some nice passes, such as his long-range, cross-field ball to Gyasi Zardes in the 17th minute. He pounced to score the USA’s fourth goal after Bradley’s corner kick was nodded into the goal area by Johannsson.

5 Ventura Alvarado (Club America/MEX) 9/0.
Easily kept Cuban forward Maikel Reyes at bay.

6 Fabian Johnson (Borussia M'Gladbach/GER) 37/1.
Left back attacked from the get-go, initiating the attacking sequence on first goal. Assisted on Zardes’ 2-0 goal with well-flighted cross. Broke up a rare Cuban attack in the 54th minute.

6 Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy) 12/2.
Wide right midfielder scored the USA’s second goal with a volley poke after meeting Johnson’s cross on the goal area’s edge. Should have scored in the 43rd when he chipped too high over out-of-position keeper Diosvelis Guerra.

6 Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake) 45/1.
Sprayed a couple sharp passes to Bedoya. Quietly covered for Bradley.

7 Michael Bradley (Toronto FC) 103/14.
Can take credit for a creating a cohesive midfield. Assisted on Johannsson’s goal with a perfectly floated ball from the U.S. half over the Cuban backline. Intercepted a ball and stormed toward the goal to set up Dempsey’s third goal.

6 Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes/FRA) 41/2.
A consistent threat on the left flank. Made smart decisions with his passes.

8 Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders) 117/47.
Got the rout started with a fine header in the fourth minute from seven yards. Scored from the spot to make it 5-0. Completed his hat trick with a neat outside-of-the-foot shot on the slide.

7 Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar/NED) 15/1.
Put USA ahead 3-0 with a golazo, chipping Guerra from 18 yards. Nodded Bradley’s corner kick to set up Gonzalez’s 4-0 goal. Drew the penalty kick that Dempsey converted.

5 Joe Corona (Veracruz/MEX) 16/2
Replaced Beckerman at halftime to play a supporting role to Bradley.

6 Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders) 22/1
Replaced Chandler at halftime at right back. Sent two good balls to Johannsson, including the cross that Johannsson was meeting when fouled by Angel Horta for penalty kick.

5 DeAndre Yedlin (Tottenham/ENG) 21/0.
Replaced Johnson in the 67th minute and made some forays but without creating scoring chances.

Interesting rankings but boring as heck game. So here's some "controversy:" the two Liga MX players, got a 5, while Yedlin who played the last fifteen or so minutes also got a 5. Why?

  2. John Soares, July 18, 2015 at 8:45 p.m.

If anything I think Yedlin deserves more credit. The tempo and energy of the game changes with him in it! Good game, fun to watch... BUT, it's Cuba.

Santiago 1314 commented on: July 18, 2015 at 3:15 p.m.@Bret… Cuba looked so bad against Mexico, because they had 6 players and the Coach, that couldn’t get Visa into the US…Only had 15 players for that game… On Second Thought.. THEY ALL SUCK, Should have stuck to Baseball… I’m trying to do the Math…Started with 15…Lost 1 Defector in Chicago…Added 5,… Lost 1 more to Defection in Arizona… Lost 2 more in Charlotte…I come up with 16…Did they add any others..???...This HIGHER Math is Killing me.!?!?!? Santiago 1314 commented on: July 18, 2015 at 4:40 p.m.4-4-2... at least JK got the formation right.. but he sent in players for Tiki-Taka... I predict a tough Slog... Should have used OVERWHELMING FORCE... Should have used the Powell Doctrine, Not Bush...///

  4. Santiago 1314, July 19, 2015 at 12:25 a.m.

CUBA Sucked even worse than I thought. .. Did they Defect BEFORE the game??? Because there was only One team on the Field, and it still took Us 4 minutes to score. .. At Least JK had the Correct Formation and Tactics... Long High Balls(OverWhelming Force)..5 goals worth of them and a PK...

You can't create controversy where there is none Ric! That's just Ric posting as Ric. Worry bro, but I can't think of anyone else even making that conclusion. USA, because we are exceptional!

  6. Chris Sapien , July 19, 2015 at 12:51 a.m.

    Sorry, not worry.

What's the Score on Defections After the game???...USA-0#Cuba-?... I heard the BUS driver Defected BEFORE the Game and Ruined their Team Shape in Front of their Goal... oh please, Somebody tell me to shut the F#$@# Up, ...I'm Dying from my own bad jokes...Off to Dream about, "Aruba, Jamaica, Come on Pretty Momma,..Bermuda, Bahamas,..Come On Pretty Momma.." or some other Piss Ant CONCAcaCrApF Island that we can Beat Up on Next... Oh, like Jamaica.?!?!...I wonder if PG is still mad at us for playing Soccer Tennis as our Warm-up...

Yes, little on which to judge. But I liked that Bradley played higher up and Beckerman further back; I liked Johannsson's movement; I liked that Dempsey was trying to connect with him. What drove me crazy was the slow grass laid on top of an artificial surface. Can't we just play this tournament on a real, completely grass field?

  9. R2 Dad, July 19, 2015 at 1:56 a.m.

Lots of long balls over the top created chances and goals, but I wish JK insisted they play on the ground instead. Glad everyone got to juice their stats but it's Cuba. In the Gold Cup. Hard to get too excited. The Costa Rica/Mexico match tomorrow holds more promise.

  10. Miguel Dedo, July 19, 2015 at 7:43 a.m.

Complements to Cuba for playing without a chip on their shoulder. Many of the CONCACAF minnows play the US as if their primary ambition is to hurt someone from the US.
Johannson is a good complement to Dempsey. His runs and constant pressure forward create room for Dempsey to roam around just inside the defensive line.

  11. Santiago 1314, July 19, 2015 at 7:53 a.m.

Yeah Miguel,... It's probably not too Smart to Kick Someone and then Show Up on their Door Step looking for Salvation from Oppression... Any Word on # of Defections Yet.??? .. Cuba Libre!!

  12. Daniel Clifton, July 19, 2015 at 10:28 a.m.

I agree with Miguel that Johannson is a good complement to Dempsey. He beat Cuba's offside trap and he is going to do that repeatedly to other teams if his teammates time their passes to him when he is making his break rather than after he has made his break.

  13. Santiago 1314, July 19, 2015 at 3:06 p.m.

@Daniel & Miguel,... Johansson(poor Man's Dempsey) and Dempsey are THE SAME Player... Underneath Lo-Forward,...You can't play 2 Check back forwards vs Mexico, (Much less Germany, Holland, Brazil, Argentina)...Who is Going to Relieve Pressure and Stretch the attack.???... Especially when Dempsey Can't(or won't) Stretch(WC2014) and Won't(or WON'T) Play Defense(Every Game!!!)... Must be Zardes up Hi-Forward vs Top Teams...

  14. Santiago 1314, July 19, 2015 at 3:50 p.m.

Nobody should Read anything into Yesterday's "Scrimmage"... Except that Jk blew a Perfect chance to integrate Beasley and Gordon into the Line-up...If we ARE to ever be able to Hold the ball Long enough to play with TWO Forwards of the abilities of Johansson and Dempsey, we will have to do a lot better in "Flow" and Width Overlaps... Look to Hyndman to play for PeckerHair... Need to have Yedlin and Fabian on same Right side...So Beasley is still out only Option at Attacking Left Def...Maybe Shea and Beasley can Hold down things for the NEXT year, but we need left sided players

  15. James Madison, July 20, 2015 at 12:11 a.m.

Except for Guzan, Bedoya and the substitutes, all the ratings should be reduced by one point in light of the opponent being undermanned Cuba. Johansson's play was a distinct improvement over his previous outing in which he committed 3 DFK fouls in his first 5 minutes while being fortunate not to be cautioned for persistent infringement.

Didn't even bother watching the game, it's CUBA!

  17. Bret Newman, July 20, 2015 at 8:07 p.m.

Hey, I see Santiago is back from that rock he crawled under, when the USWNT beat Germany and blew out Japan. Santiago had nothing negative to say then. Well hopefully the USA can win the Gold Cup, and silence Santiago once again.

  18. Santiago 1314, July 20, 2015 at 8:41 p.m.

Bret, Where u Been Hiding!!!... I Already ate my Humble Pie, a long time ago...Amazing how a Change of Formation, and insertion of Technical players (That I didn't think we dad) Changed the whole Complexion of the US Women's Team... I gave Coach Jill and LLloyd (11).. Rest of team (10)...*** Santiago 1314 commented on: July 7, 2015 at 10:27 p.m....For Bret;... Sorry, I've been on Cyber Sabbatical... Wasn't sure if u saw this on the other Thread...**Santiago 1314 commented on: July 7, 2015 at 5:02 p.m.@Bob, I was very Pleasantly Surprised to see the Level of Skill Displayed over the last 4 games... The Insertion of Brian Morgan to Holding Mid was a Revelation.. So Composed on the Ball... No Panic.. That was also Infectious... The Team really Settled down and Played With Skill and Composure, that I didn't think they were capable of. ..So I'll admit to Underestimating them, and eat some Humble Pie.
