USA gets break in World Cup 2018 qualifying draw

The USA was drawn with Trinidad & Tobago and the winners of St. Vincent & The Grenadines/Aruba and Antigua & Barbuda/Guatemala in the third round of World Cup 2018 qualifying in the Concacaf zone. It should be a relatively easy group from which the top two teams advance to the Hexagonal, the final round of qualifying, certainly a lot easier than Group B, which might feature four of the seven 2015 Gold Cup quarterfinalists still alive in World Cup qualifying.

USA vs. Potential Group C Opponents:
Antigua & Barbuda 2-0-0
Aruba 0-0-0
Guatemala 15-4-6
St. Vincent & The Grenadines 0-0-0
Trinidad & Tobago 16-2-3

The original draw was done in January 2015 and teams were seeded based on the August 2014 FIFA rankings. Of the six teams that played in the 2013 Hexagonal, only Jamaica was not one of the six teams that had a bye into the semifinal round.

Of the 2015 Gold Cup quarterfinals still alive, only Jamaica and Haiti have to play their way into the semifinal round. If they advance, they'll both play in Group B with Costa Rica and Panama. (Cuba, the eighth Gold Cup quarterfinalist, lost to Curacao in the second round of qualifying.)

Of the six possible opponents, the USA drew the two easiest possible pairings -- St. Vincent & The Grenadines/Aruba and Antigua & Barbuda/Guatemala -- the only two that do not feature a former World Cup finalist.

The USA, which is seeking to qualify for the eighth consecutive World Cup, will begin the road to Russia in November with two games. The third round will take place in September with home-and-home series to determine the six teams that will join the six seeds in the third round. when CONCACAF Semifinal Round play begins in November.

The dates for the six-game semifinal series are Nov. 13 and 17, 2015, March 25 and 29, 2016 and Sept. 2 and 6, 2016.

Concacaf Semifinals:

Curacao/El Salvador

Costa Rica

Trinidad & Tobago
St. Vincent & The Grenadines/Aruba
Antigua & Barbuda/Guatemala

Interesting comment since JK has the highest winning percentage of any USMNT coach.

Apparently, however, JK specializes in winning friendlies.
