USL Roundup: Board of Governors meets in Denver

The USL's rapid growth is an important topic during midseason meetings.

For the third straight year, the USL has held its annual midseason Board of Governors meeting in conjunction with the MLS All-Star Game.

“It is great to have all of the league’s leadership under one roof,” USL President Jake Edwards said. “The strong ownership groups within the USL are one of the key components of our league’s success.”

The league’s rapid growth has been a crucial factor for planning. Edwards has stated that expansion for the 2016 season is finalized and the league does not comment on its expansion plans or prospective franchises. The league confirmed two weeks ago that Rio Grande Valley FC would start play next year as a 25th team. It added 13 teams between 2014 and 2015. The 2016 expansion list will be much more modest.

Orlando City, which is severing its affiliation with Louisville next month, and the Philadelphia Union will field USL teams in 2016.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported Wednesday that a blog post stating Reno would join USL next year is incorrect. Management of the Reno Aces baseball team is negotiating a partnership by which the team would launch a USL team in 2017. Aces owner Herb Simon would also own the soccer team.

“We don’t have a franchise at this moment,” said Aces president Eric Edelstein. “We have been in talks for some time and we are actively pursuing a franchise that, if awarded, would play at Aces Ballpark and would be owned by Herb Simon.”

International Friendlies

Toronto FC II played a 2-2 tie with the Roma Primavera youth team at Ontario Soccer Centre Tuesday, and Roma prevailed in a penalty-kick shootout, 5-3. Raheem Edwards and Marco Nunesscored for TFC II, which rallied from a deficit to take the lead but ultimately came up short from the spot.

Forward Edoardo Soleri opened the scoring near the end of the first half when he beat the offside trap, eluded TFC II goalkeeper Filippo Di Bennardo, and tallied into an empty net. Edwards equalized by converting a through ball from Mo Babouli and TFC grabbed the lead in the 80th minute when Nunes took a feed from Edwin Rivas to hit the go-ahead goal.

AS Roma Primavera re-tied the game when midfielder Conor Borg scored in the 85th minute and got the win in a shootout.

USL Player of the Week

Two goals by Jason Plumhoff, including a stoppage-time winner, has earned him USL Player of the Week honors. He scored twice for Harrisburg City Islanders in a 4-3 defeat of Pittsburgh in which they persevered despite finishing the game with 10 men Plumhoff earned 67 percent of the vote conducted by a national panel of independent media. Toronto FC II goalkeeper Quillan Roberts finished second with 33 percent.

Why no USL team in San Francisco? Seems a no brainer if they could find a stadium. Enough teams on the West Coast that much of the travel would be reasonably.
