Rapids jump in as frantic transfer period ends

Did New York City FC or Columbus Crew SC or Orlando City SC or Colorado or somebody else do itself the most good during the summer transfer window? Deals were done at a whirlwind pace as the transfer period came to a close Thursday and many teams are looking significantly different as the smoke clears.

A blockbuster signing of Giovani dos Santos by the Galaxy tops the deals cut by Western teams, though Houston could look very different once Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres – who went on loan to Guadalajara in January and didn’t make his debut for the Dynamo until July 21 in an Open Cup game – gets into the flow. Dos Santos scored on his debut Thursday as the Galaxy rolled over Central FC, 5-1, in its Concacaf Champions League opener.

Seattle followed up its signing of Austrian Andres Ivanschitz by acquiring Paraguayan attacker Nelson Valdez, and Colorado jumped in just as the window closed to drastically alter a defense that will be anchored by World Cup and English Premier League veteran Maynor Figueroa. The Rapids also claimed defender Sean St. Ledger off waivers a week after he'd been jettisoned by Orlando City, and sold defender Shane O'Neill to Cypriot club Apollon Limassol. Vancouver added Costa Rican right back Jordan Smith on loan.

Columbus Crew SC, New York City FC and Orlando City SC were among the most active teams, perhaps reflecting the Eastern Conference’s blend of mediocrity and parity. After leader D.C. United (41 points), only an 11-point spread separates the second-place Red Bulls and last-place Union. Getting Shaun Wright-Phillips alongside brother Bradley and landing winger Gonzalo Veron give the Red Bulls a different look heading into a derby match against New York City FC Sunday.

Toronto brought Gomez back to MLS after acquiring his rights from Sporting Kansas City (formerly the Wizards) in a trade. Gomez, 33, played eight MLS seasons (2002-9) for the Galaxy, Rapids, and Kansas City and scored 23 goals in 124 games.

Here’s a rundown of the significant -- and confirmed -- moves made from late June to the close of the window:
