Keane: 'Gio has been brilliant and only getting better'

For the LA Galaxy's second game of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, Coach Bruce Arena rotated his starters or gave them the night off entirely with one very big exception -- new signing Giovani dos Santos, who went the distance and set up two goals as the MLS champions waltzed past Comunicaciones, winner of the last six Guatemalan national championships, 5-0.

CCL Week 2, Results:
TUESDAY, AUGUST 18
Tigres (MEX) 2 Isidro Metapan (SLV) 1
Verdes FC (BLZ) 0 Queretaro (MEX) 0
LA Galaxy 5 Comunicaciones (GUA) 0

The Galaxy got two goals each from Alan Gordon and Robbie Keane (off the bench) as it won its seventh straight game at home, upping its goal differential to 32-5.  Dos Santos assisted on the opening goal scored by Mika Vayrynen in the fifth minute and set up Keane's first goal in the 87th minute.

“He did a little bit of everything tonight," said Arena after the game. "He could’ve had some goals, I think we could have been a little bit cleaner with him and found him a little bit earlier in and around the penalty area. But on the night, his passing was good and his running off the ball was very good. He had a very good night; I thought the effort he put in was tremendous.”

Keane, who added the fifth goal two minutes after he scored his first goal, said the partnership with Dos Santos whom he played with briefly at Tottenham will only get better.

“It’s like we have been playing together for a long time,"  he said. "We obviously know each other, but it’s certainly getting better.  Nearly every day Gio has gotten an assist. He’s a fantastic player, always a team player, never selfish and always wanting the team to do well.  He’s getting more mature now, he was only a kid 18 years of age, and he knows what he wants and what he has to do.  So far he’s been brilliant and is only getting better."
