Carli Lloyd gets book deal for life story

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will publish the memoir of U.S. women’s national team captain Carli Lloyd, whose hat trick in the first 16 minutes of the Women's World Cup final helped give the USA its third world championship.

The memoir is scheduled for release in fall 2016. It will reflect on Lloyd’s soccer career -- from almost quitting the game in 2003 to becoming a U.S. legend, scoring the winning goals in two Olympic finals in addition to her three goals in the 5-2 win over Japan in the championship game.

“It was clear that Carli channeled something deep inside the day she made history in the World Cup final,” said Susan Canavan, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's senior executive editor. “But the fact is she has been working toward this level of supreme athletic performance her entire life, through ups and downs, triumphs and disappointments, all the while with a steely determination. Her story is an inspiration to all women and athletes who strive to achieve something greater -- and are willing to work for it. We are delighted to bring that story to readers.”

The North American rights were sold at auction by Jay Mandel at William Morris Endeavor. The memoir will be followed by a special edition for young readers.

“Winning the World Cup with my teammates was one of the most thrilling moments I could imagine,” said Lloyd in a statement. “Getting there was a long journey, sometimes rewarding, sometimes challenging, but worth every moment of hard work and sacrifice. I’m super excited to have the opportunity to work with Susan and HMH to tell my story. I think it will be a book that will inspire and motivate players, fans, coaches and anyone who wants to achieve their dreams.”
