Wednesday night: Sounders first MLS team to fall in CCL

A week after the Seattle Sounders rallied from 1-0 in the 90th minute to beat Olimpia, they traveled to Honduras for the rematch. Fielding the same team of mostly reserves, the Sounders dropped a 1-0 decision, the first defeat by an MLS club in the first three weeks of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League group stage.

CCL Week 3, Results:
Wednesday, August 26
San Francisco (PAN) 2 Queretaro (MEX) 1
Olimpia (HON) 1 Seattle Sounders 0
Herediano (CRC) 1 Tigres (MEX) 1
Tuesday, August 25
D.C. United 3 Montego Bay United (JAM) 0
Saprissa (CRC) 2 Santos (MEX) 1
Municipal (GUA) 2 Santa Tecla (SLV) 1

Alberth Elis, who had scored in the first match, had the winner for Olimpia in the 60th minute. The 19-year-old forward scored through a maze of three defenders after keeper Troy Perkins came off his line to break up an attack by Ever Alvarado and the ball popped free to Ellis in the middle.

The Sounders created few opportunities for themselves in the Estadio Nacional, putting just one shot on target. The game marked the return of Marco Pappa, a second-half sub, for the first time since July 18 and his DUI arrest and mandatory entry into treatment.

The Sounders are 1-1-1 after three games and still lead Group F with four points though they only have one game to play on Sept. 23 against Vancouver at CenturyLink Field. A Sounders' victory would eliminate the Whitecaps and require Olimpia to get four out of six points in its two games against the 'Caps Sept. 16 and Oct. 22 to beat out the Sounders. The 1-0 win gives Olimpia the edge in a tiebreaker against the Sounders thanks to its away goal in the 2-1 loss in Seattle.

The LA Galaxy and D.C. United are both 2-0-0, Real Salt Lake is 1-0-0, and Vancouver is 0-0-1. MLS's 6-1-0 record against non-MLS teams is better than Liga MX' 6-2-2 record. Both defending champion Santos and Queretaro lost this week, while Tigres was held to a tie.
