Canada calls up nine MLS players to face Belize

Leading Rookie of the Year candidate Cyle Larin and 2014 winner Tesho Akindele are among nine Canadian MLS players summoned for a Concacaf World Cup qualifying series against Belize.

Head coach Benito Floro has named 22 players for games against Belize to be played Sept. 4 and 8. The winner advances to a semifinal group that includes Honduras, Mexico, and another country to be determined.

Larin, 20, who has tied the MLS rookie record of 11 goals playing for Orlando City, has earned 10 caps and scored three goals for Canada since his debut in May, 2014. Akindele, 23, of FC Dallas made his international debut earlier this year in June and has scored one goal in four appearances.

Midfielders Will Johnson (Portland), Kyle Bekker (Montreal), and Russell Teibert (Vancouver) have been summoned, along with goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau (Montreal) and three defenders: Sam Adekugbe (Vancouver), Marcel de Jong (Sporting Kansas City), and Karl Ouimette (Red Bulls). Johnson and Atiba Hutchinson of Turkish club Besiktas did not play in this summer's Gold Cup.
