Spirit and FCKC headed to NWSL playoffs after 0-0 tie

With two weekends left in the NWSL's third season, the suspense is over. Seattle Reign FC retained the Shield after winning a second straight NWSL regular-season championship Wednesday night, and the Washington Spirit and defending champion FC Kansas City completed the playoff field. Their 0-0 tie at Swope Soccer Village was enough to secure a spot in the playoffs for both teams -- and eliminate the Portland Thorns, who have nonetheless sold out their final game of the season on Sunday.

At Thursday's game, FC Kansas City had a lengthy celebration honoring retiring women's national team midfielder Lauren Holiday. During the ceremony, FC Kansas City retired her number, 12, and unveiled a flag that will fly when the team plays at Swope Soccer Village.

Although the Thorns, the 2013 champions, have been eliminated from the playoffs, their final home game Sunday against Washington is already a sellout, the second sellout of the 2015 season. Portland played in front of 21,144 fans, the club’s first sellout, against Seattle on July 22.

    "Retired her number" already? The whole team has been in existence for less than 4 years.
