"This is really the last chance for all of the players to make an impression before we select the final roster for qualifying," Herzog said. "We have a strong group of players that we believe in, and now we are able to look as some of the guys who did very well with our U-20 team.”
Included in the squad are seven players who played for the USA during its quarterfinal run at the 2015 U-20 World Cup in June: goalkeeper Zack Steffen, defenders Cameron Carter-Vickers and Matt Miazga, midfielders Emerson Hyndman and Gedion Zelalem, and forwards Rubio Rubin and Maki Tall. The USA fell on penalty kicks to eventual champion Serbia.
The U.S. U-23s beat both England (2-1) and Qatar (1-0) in June while finishing in third place at the Toulon Tournament, where they also beat the Netherlands, 3-1, and fell to Costa Rica (2-1) and France (3-1). Mario Rodriguez, who scored in a 3-1 friendly win over Mexico in April, missed the Toulon Tournament but returns to the squad for the England camp.
Julian Green, the 20-year-old who scored for the USA at the 2014 World Cup, played at the Toulon Tournament but was not called in for the England camp. His Bayern Munich II squad, which is in second place in the German fourth division Bavaria Regionalliga, has three games during that period. Green has started all six games so far for Bayern Munich II and has one goal and two assists.
The USA hosts the 2015 Concacaf Olympic Qualifying Championship and faces Canada, Cuba and Panama in group play.
