MLS Weekend: Bottom feeders finish on top

There is a big gap between MLS's two conferences -- the Western Conference is plus-14 in interconference play -- but the difference between the top and bottom of the Western Conference isn't much. The top five teams all played bottom five teams this weekend, and the bottom five teams won four of five games.

San Jose began the weekend with a convincing 1-0 win over the LA Galaxy for its fourth straight win. But the Quakes were still in seventh place at the end of the weekend as the Seattle Sounders beat the Portland Timbers, 2-1. Houston and Colorado beat Vancouver and Sporting KC, respectively. Real Salt Lake was the only bottom five team that lost, and the defeat sent it into the cellar.

In the Eastern Conference, the three top five teams that played bottom teams all won. Orlando City's 1-1 tie with Chicago was enough to move it into sixth place ahead of slumping Montreal. The Impact still has three or four games in hand on the other four teams in the bottom half of the conference in which just two points separate the five teams.
