Jordan Morris, who was not called up for the U.S. senior national team or under-23 team because of his college commitments, scored his first goal of the 2015season to give Stanford a 1-0 win at Louisville. The goal — Morris’ 11th of his college career — came on a through ball by Ty Thompson in the 81st minute.

“That was a wonderful through ball from Thommo,” Stanford head coach Jeremy Gunn said, “and the finish was tremendous as well. I’m sohappy for Jordan. He has been working hard coming back from an injury, which can be frustrating. It wasn’t just a great reward for all the work he did tonight, but also everything he has donethe past couple of weeks.”

Louisville outshot the Cardinal, 8-5, but only managed to put the two on target to Stanford’s three. The Stanford win came three days after theCardinal lost to UC Santa Barbara for the first time in 11 years, 1-0..

“I’m extremely happy with the result, but happier with the overall performance and strength theteam showed tonight,” Gunn said. “It was a tremendous game of soccer between two very good teams. Chances were at a premium and either side could have won. In all fairness, we just edgedit. If it were a boxing match, we might have earned the decision six rounds to four.”

The match drew 2,156 fans on a Monday night Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Soccer Stadium, whichopened in 2014 and was built at a cost of $18.5 million, making it the second largest capital project undertaken by the Louisville athletic department.

“The complex and facilitiesLouisville has created are absolutely the gold standard of college soccer,” Gunn added. “The setup is truly incredible.”

  1. Jordan’s teammate at Stanford, Amir Bashti, played at UCSB, then got a plane (with the UCSB keeper Justin Vom Steeg actually) and flew to Serbia with team USA. I don’t know why Jordan wasn’t called up, but I don’t think college commitments are the reason why. Maybe he refused a call up?
