Dunn honored after getting Washington into NWSL playoffs

The Washington Spirit's Crystal Dunn, who is running away with the NWSL scoring race, was voted the NWSL Player of the Month after helping the Spirit get back into the playoffs. She scored two goals -- her fifth and sixth goals of the month -- and recorded an assist to help the Spirit earn a point on the road in a 3-3 draw against Portland Thorns FC on Sunday night.

Dunn, a late cut from the 2015 U.S. Women's World Cup team, currently leads the league with 15 goals. The former North Carolina star is the first NWSL player to receive the award six times in a season, when she was honored with the award in Weeks 3, 8, 11, 16, 18 and 20.

The Spirit finishes the regular season Saturday against Seattle Reign FC at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Both teams have already clinched playoff berths. The Reign has clinched first place. The Spirit is hoping for a win and a loss or draw for Chicago against Houston in order to clinch home-field advantage during the Sept. 13 semifinals.

Washington was fourth in the NWSL in 2014 after finishing last in 2013.
