Indiana Pacers owner will launch USL team in Reno in 2017

Herb Simon, owner of the NBA’s Indiana Pacers and managing partner of the Reno Aces of the Pacific Coast League baseball team, will be the owner of the Reno team that will begin play in the USL in 2017. The team will play at Aces Ballpark, a state-of-the-art facility with 6,500 seats that opened in 20019.

Reno Aces President Eric Edelstein will occupy the same role for the Reno USL club. Chris Gelfuso will serve as chief financial officer, and Andrew Daugherty will be the assistant general manager.

“The USL is thrilled to welcome Reno, Nevada as its 28th franchise,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said. “The vibrant city of Reno, combined with the outstanding ownership of Herb Simon, will assuredly create a most professional soccer organization."

Reno is the first team announced for 2017. Teams in the Rio Grande Valley (affiliated with the Houston Dynamo), Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia Union second team) and FC Cincinnati have been announced for 2016. Orlando City announced intentions to field a second team in Central Florida, dropping its affiliation with Louisville City.

I really hope they tie into UNR college soccer, local high schools & the youth club system, also they really need to bridge into the Latino community and its strong support for football. Also I hope they can tie into an MLS team so they can build a development path. Given its the Pacers i hope they are willing to invest in a academy to tie the development pieces together.
