NASL: Ottawa overtakes Cosmos in overall standings

With the New York Cosmos off last week, the Ottawa Fury played their game in hand and beat San Antonio, 1-0, overtaking the Cosmos for the lead in the overall standings. Fort Lauderdale's 4-0 win over Carolina moved the Strikers into the playoff zone at the expense of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, who settled for a scoreless tie with Atlanta.

With Ottawa, the Cosmos -- via their spring championship --  and Minnesota having already clinched, only one playoff spot remains up for grabs with two weeks left in the regular season.

The Strikers control their own destiny -- five points from their final three games would take them to the postseason. They have a game in hand on Tampa Bay and two on Edmonton.

Ottawa keeper Romuald Peiser posted a league record 14th shutout of the season against San Antonio while Mauro Eustaquio scored the gamewinner.
