Ottawa clinches NASL fall championship

The Ottawa Fury clinched the NASL's fall championship with a game to spare when it defeated Jacksonville Armada FC, 3-1, on Wednesday night. Ottawa has lost only once in its last 24 matches, a loss at home to Jacksonville in the first game of the fall season.

Rafael Alves, Sinisa Ubiparipovic and Andrew Weidemanscored second-half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit as the Fury assured itself of playing a semifinal match at TD Place.

Ottawa can clinch the No. 1 seed if the New York Cosmos, the spring champions, lose at San Antonio on Saturday night or with a win in its regular-season finale at Atlanta on Oct. 31. Minnesota United will be the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers are in line to gain the fourth and final spot in the playoffs after a 0-0 draw against the San Antonio Scorpions.

Wednesday's results eliminated FC Edmonton, San Antonio, and Jacksonville from postseason contention. Indy Eleven was eliminated after last weekend's action. Now Carolina, Atlanta, and Tampa Bay are alive with two games to play in the fall season.
