MLS: Sporting KC in danger after rare home defeat

Sporting Kansas City blew a chance to clinch a playoff berth when it suffered only its second home loss of the 2015 campaign on Wednesday, falling 2-0 to the Colorado Rapids at Sporting Park. The defeat leaves Sporting KC in sixth place in the Western Conference and in need of a win against the LA Galaxy on Sunday to be assured of returning to the playoffs.

MLS Results, Week 34:
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21
Sporting KC 0 Colorado 2.
COL: Dillon Powers (Juan Ramirez, Kevin Doyle) 78
COL: Marcelo Sarvas (Juan Ramirez) 86
Red Card:
COL: Sam Cronin 84.

A draw or loss in the finale would leave Sporting KC in danger of missing out on the playoffs. In that case, San Jose would go to the playoffs ahead of Sporting KC if it beats FC Dallas. The Earthquakes would nose out Sporting KC if they tie FC Dallas and Sporting KC loses to the Galaxy.

Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said Sunday's game will be for all intents and purposes a playoff game.

"We're playing a play-in game to get in the playoffs," he said after the loss to the Rapids. "That's what we're doing. We just happen to be playing it at home. It's that simple; there's nothing else to read into it."
