Americans Abroad: Bobby Wood scores and assists

Nine of the 10 foreign-based players Coach Jurgen Klinsmann called in for this month's World Cup qualifiers saw action for their clubs last weekend. Forward Bobby Woodscored and assisted for German second division Union Berlin.

Wood scored Union Berlin’s first goal and assisted on its second in a 3-3 tie with FC Nuremberg. Wood now has five goals and two assists for the 14th place Union.

The two winners last weekend were Geoff Cameron, a second-half sub for Stoke City in its 1-0 victory over Chelsea, and Miguel Ibarra, a late sub of Leon in its 3-1 win at Santos Laguna.

Only defender Ventura Alvarado, whose Club America fell to Puebla, didn’t get off the bench.

The USA begins its World Cup 2018 qualifying next Friday against St. Vincent & the Grenadines at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and plays at Trinidad & Tobago Nov. 17.
