John Brooks and Julian Green join U.S. U-23s for Brazil tour

John Brooks and Julian Green, who both scored in their only appearances in the 2014 World Cup for the USA, have been called in for the U.S. U-23s' two-game tour of Brazil in preparation for the Olympic qualifying series against Colombia.

Coach Andi Herzog called in 19 players for friendlies against Brazil Nov. 11 in Recife and Nov. 15 in Belem. Nine of the players were part of the roster for the Concacaf Olympic Qualifying Tournament in October, when the USA squandered a chance to qualify for the Rio 2016 Games with a 2-0 semifinal loss to Honduras. Beating Canada, 2-0, in the third-place game earned the USA the playoff with Colombia.

Green has six goals and three assists for Bayern Munich II in 16 fourth division appearances. Brooks, like Green a German product, started in Hertha Berlin’s 3-1 win over Hannover 96 last Friday. It was Brooks' fifth Bundesliga 1 appearance of the season and second start.

At the 2014 World Cup, Green played the final 15 minutes of the USA’s 2-1 round of 16 loss to Belgium and scored the USA’s lone goal. Brooks also made one World Cup appearance, entering at halftime of the 2-1 opening win against Ghana and scoring the gamewinner.

"These matches against Brazil are a huge opportunity for us," Herzog said in a press release. "On one hand you have a strong challenging South American opponent in Brazil, with a playing style that's similar to that of Colombia, and on the other we'll get to experience playing in Brazil, which is where we hope to be next summer for the Olympics."

Defender Matt Miazga of the New York Red Bulls and Stanford University forward Jordan Morris, starters for the U-23s in qualifying, were called in to the full national team for 2018 World Cup qualifying games Friday against St. Vincent & the Grenadines Stadium in St. Louis and at Trinidad & Tobago Nov. 17.
