U.S. Open Cup: Five East Coast teams advance

Three-time U.S. Open Cup champions New York Pancyprian Freedoms were among five teams to advance to the third qualifying round of the U.S. Open Cup with wins over the weekend. Lansdowne Bhoys FC, Aromas Cafe FC, Southie FC and West Chester United, all East Coast teams, also advanced in the 103rd edition of the tournament.

The Pancyprian Freedoms used two first-half goals from Keith Deteli and former Puerto Rico international Chris Megaloudis to beat Jersey Shore Boca, 2-1.

Charlottesville, Virginia-based Aromas Cafe FC got two goals from Jake Van Yahres, who played at American Univrsity and VCU, to defeat Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks FC, 3-1.

The second round concludes with eight matches played in California, Colorado, Florida and Louisiana on Saturday and Sunday. Twelve of the 14 winners in closest proximity to each other will compete in the third qualifying round to be held next April.

The remaining two winners will be awarded the first two slots into the 2016 U.S. Open Cup from the Open Division local qualifying track and will be joined by the six victors from the third qualifying round.
