The 28-year-old Italian left Juventus last January and almost immediately set the bar for attacking Designated Players incredibly high. He was involved in two or more goals in 12 games, which is another league record, and from distance on free kicks and from the run of play, from in tight, and from ridiculous angles. Two of his goals are among the final eight candidates for Goal of the Year.
The Newcomer of the Year
award is determined by votes submitted by coaches and team officials, media members, and current players. Didier Drogba of Montreal finished a distant second and Mike
Grella of the Red Bulls placed third.
