Red Bulls' success nets Marsch Coach of the Year honors

Inexperienced head coaches don’t often flourish in MLS, yet in just his second season as a head coach and first in charge of the Red Bulls, Jesse Marschearned honors as Coach of the Year.

Voting by MLS team coaches and officials, current players, and media members determined the Coach of the Year selection. FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja, whose team tied New York in the overall standings with 60 points, finished second in the voting. Carl Robinson of Vancouver placed third.

Marsch, 42, was fired after coaching Montreal to a 12-16-6 record in its inaugural MLS season (2012), and took over the Red Bulls last winter after the team decided to cut loose club icon Mike Petke. Playing a pressing system installed by Marsch, the Red Bulls won their second Supporters’ Shield in the past three seasons with a record of 18-10-6 and finished seven points ahead of runner-up Columbus in the Eastern Conference.

Prior to coaching the Impact, Marsch worked as an assistant coach with the U.S. national team. The native of Racine, Wisconsin, played collegiately at Princeton and in his pro career played 321 games for D.C. United, Chicago and Chivas USA. He retired as a player after the 2009 season. He is the first New York representative to be named Coach of the Year.
