MLS: TFC doesn't pick up options on Bendik and Konopka

The goalkeeping situation for Toronto FC could look much different in 2016. Among the four players whose options have been declined are goalies Joe Bendik and Chris Konopka, who shared duties for all 34 regular-season games last year. Neither was outstanding: Konopka compiled a 1.48 goals allowed average in 21 starts and Bendik came in at 2.08.

TFC also declined options on midfielders Manny Aparicio and Jackson. TFC can re-sign them until Dec. 10, the day before Stage 1 of the Re-Entry Draft. Forward Robbie Findley’s contract is about to expire: he is eligible for the Re-Entry Draft, as are Bendik, Konopka, and Jackson.

Goalkeeper Quillan Roberts was one of 13 players to have their options renewed. Among those renewed were defenders Mark Bloom, Nick Hagglund and Ashtone Morgan, and midfielders Jonathan Osorio and Collen Warner.

Many of the teams’ starters are under contract for 2016, including midfielders Michael Bradley and Benoit Cheyrou, and forwards Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore. The team announced Monday that left back Justin Morrow has signed a new contract.

“Stability at this time is of the utmost importance,” said general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a team press release announcing the moves. “This represents the highest number of returning players as we look to build on the positives from this past season.

“We have a strong core group of players that have gained valuable experience over the course of the season. We will use the offseason to add to our group and continue towards our goal of becoming consistent contenders.”

Best move ever by the club in getting rid of Jackson. What MLS team will pick up this mediocre player remains to be seen.
