Payne carries Duke past Florida State

Junior Toni Payne was a one-woman wrecking crew, setting up Kayla McCoy with the first goal and scoring the second goal with one second left on the clock after a run from midfield to give Duke a 2-0 win over Florida State that snapped the Seminoles’ 10-game streak of NCAA Division I Women's Tournament shutout wins. The Blue Devils return to the title game for the first time since 2011.

Against the run of play, McCoy gave the Blue Devils the lead in the 32nd minute when she fired a shot into the bottom left corner after taking a pass from Payne, who raced down the right side and drew in four FSU defenders before slipping the ball through to the freshman.

The goal snapped Florida State's NCAA record for consecutive scoreless minutes in NCAA Tournament play at 931 minutes.

McCoy almost made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute when Payne made another great run into the penalty box but hit the crossbar. That was the Blue Devils' best chance until Payne sealed the win in the final second.

"We atarted our year defensively and our attacking took a little while to catch up with our defense and it is now starting to catch up," said Duke coach Robbie Church. "Once Toni gets the ball and she places up and she’s running at you, ‘Oh Wow’, I don’t want to be the defender on the end of that."

Florida State finished with a 16-8 edge in shots but could not beat keeper EJ Proctor. The sophomore got lots of help from her defense as Ashton Miller cleared a shot by Natalia Kuikka off the line in the first half and Lizzy Raben made a great defensive stop on Kaycie Tillman with a sliding tackle in the second half.

“It stings a little bit,” Florida State coach Mark Krikorian said. “Because you come into this with the intent and hope to play on Sunday and we won’t. I thought for much of the game we played quite well, but today we lost to a team that played better than we did.”
