Stanford and Akron won on golden goals while Syracuse's winner came in the 79th minute as they joined Clemson in the NCAA Division I Men's final four.
Foster Langsdorf's
header in the 97th minute gave Stanford the 2-1 win at No. 1 seed Wake Forest three minutes after
Brandon Vincent had a potential winning penalty kick for the Cardinal saved by Wake
keeper
Alec Ferrell.
U.S. international
Jordan Morris had put Stanford ahead in the 18th minute off passes from Vincent and
Corey Baird, who also assisted on
Langsdorf's goal.
Ian Harkes, the son of
John Harkes, converted a penalty kick in the 70th minute to tie the match.
In Friday's semifinals, Stanford will
play Akron, a 3-2 winner over Creighton on a free kick from junior
Adam Najem in the 102nd minute. It's the Zips' first trip to the College Cup since 2010 under
Caleb Porter.
The Zips broke a scoreless deadlock in the 60th minute when
Victor Souto scored on a penalty kick. Four minutes later, the score was even as
Fernando Castellanos equalized for
Creighton.
Stuart Holthusen put Akron ahead for a second time in the 80th minute, but
Ricardo Perez's goal in the 85th minute sent the game to overtime.
In the
other semifinal, Clemson, a shootout winner over Maryland on Friday night, will play ACC rival Syracuse, which beat Boston College on
Ben Polk's header.
