USA qualifies for U-20 WWC and takes Concacaf crown

The USA kept intact its streak of qualifying for every U-20 Women's World Cup since the biennial tournament's launch in 2002 thanks to a 7-0 win on Friday over host Honduras in the semifinals of the 2015 Concacaf U-20 Women's Championship, which the USA won on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Canada.

In the clincher against Honduras, the USA’s 17-year-old captain Mallory Pugh scored twice, giving her a tournament-high seven goals. Ashley Sanchez, who assisted on four goals coming into the semifinal, also scored twice against Honduras.

Sanchez, after pouncing on a weak pass by Canadian goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx, scored in the winner against Canada in the 72nd minute to give the USA its fourth straight Concacaf U-20 crown. Canada had shutout all four of its opponents going into the final.

In addition to the USA and Canada, Mexico qualified for the 2016 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Nov. 13-Dec. 3 in Papua New Guinea thanks to its 2-0 win over host Honduras in the third-place game. Both of Mexico’s goals were scored by USA-raised Mexican-Americans -- Southern Californians Kiana Palacios and Jacqueline Crowther.

The USA’s Jessie Scarpa finished second in scoring behind Pugh with five goals. Pugh won the Golden Ball (MVP) in addition to the Golden Shoe. U.S. goalkeeper Rose Chandler won the Golden Glove.
