Barcelona beat city rival Espanyol, 4-1 in a heated first leg of their Copa de Rey round-of-16 series on Wednesday but it could be costly for Barca as star Luis Suarez
faces a ban of up to
three Copa del Rey matches after being cited for calling Espanyol players "a waste of space" and sparking a brawl in the tunnel after the game.
Espanyol had two players sent off and was
lucky that goalkeeper Pau Lopez
's violent stamp on Lionel Messi
From referee Juan Martinez Munuera
"While all the Espanyol players
climbed the stairs in the tunnel towards the locker rooms, [Suarez] waited for them and confronted them saying on various occasions: 'Here I am waiting for you, come here; you are a waste of space.'
That provoked a clash between players from both clubs forcing security personnel present and the managerial staff from both teams to intervene."
A suspension would be Suarez's first since
joining Barcelona 18 months -- and his first since the four-month ban he received for biting Giorgio Chiellini
at the 2014 World Cup.
