Making a List: Obafemi Martins' Goals of the Week

If you ranked players by the number of Goals of the Week they scored, MLS could be losing its most exciting player. BBC Sport reported that 31-year-old Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins, whose 40 MLS goals in three seasons with the Seattle Sounders include nine MLS Goals of the Week, was headed to Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League. So much for MLS not being impacted by the Chinese spending spree.

MLS Goals of the Week (2013-15)
9 Obafemi Martins
8 Diego Valeri
6 Javier Morales
3 Will Johnson
3 Thierry Henry
3 Graham Zusi

Martins was not with the Sounders at their Southern California training camp on Sunday but no deal has been announced by either club or Martins or his representatives.

Martins signed with the Sounders at the start of the 2013 MLS season from Spain's Malaga. His totals with Seattle are 43 goals in 84 games in all competitions. His one blanking -- and it's significant -- no goals and no assists in eight playoff games.

His nine Goals of the Week include the 2014 MLS Goal of the Year, a ball he chipped over San Jose keeper Jon Busch from an impossible angle.

Martins is a top quality player with a top notch soccer IQ. I'm sure that his departure is for his families financial future.

There is always the "rest of the story".
Regardless, he is going to be missed and the Sounders (assuming they had a choice) make come to regret it.

Obafemi has been our best player for the past few years - and it's not just the spectacular goals. He has been fantastic at controlling long balls (so prevalent in MLS) while under pressure, allowing our attack to develop, and his quality with Dempsey have given us one of the best forward tandems in the league. If he truly is leaving my only hope is that they have made sure he knows he is welcome back should he find (like Drogba) that China is a desolate landscape for professional footballers.
Sincere thanks for all the fantastic memories Mr. Martins - the fans in Seattle will definitely miss seeing you on the pitch!

First time I saw Martin's magic was at Inter. Gifted and passionate players are a perfect combo.
