U.S. Abroad: Pulisic gets first Bundesliga start

Midfielder Christian Pulisic, the 17-year-old Pennsylvania product, made his first Bundesliga start, playing the first half of Borussia Dortmund's 1-0 win on Sunday at Bayer Leverkusen. In Mexico's Liga MX, defender Edgar Castillo scored for first-place Monterrey in its 5-1 win over Veracruz.

GERMANY. Pulisic, playing in his fourth Bundesliga game since debuting on Jan. 30, was one of five new starters for a Borussia Dortmund team coming off a 2-0 Europa League win over Porto on Thursday. Playing in the left wing, Pulisic didn't see much of the ball as Dortmund attacked mainly on the right and struggled to find its rhythm. He squandered a chance in the penalty area when he misplayed a back-heel pass from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But in stoppage time of the first half, he served up Aubameyang for the Dortmund's best scoring opportunity up to that point.

Pulisic was replaced at halftime time by German international Marco Reus, who may have been rested for the first half because he suffered from a bad foul in the Porto game. Reus helped set up Aubameyang's 64th-minute gamewinner.

Bobby Wood, who last week scored his ninth goal for second division Union Berlin, was a late scratch with a shoulder injury. Fabian Johnson helped fifth-place Borussia Moenchengladbach to a 1-0 win over Cologne.

MEXICO. Paul Arriola helped spark Tijuana's attack when he entered the Xolos game against Morelia in the 76th minute and he assisted on Dayro Moreno's goal in the 1-1 tie. Edgar Castillo scored his first goal since joining Monterrey in 2015. The 5-1 win over Veracruz kept Monterrey atop the overall standings, three points ahead of Leon, a 4-1 winner of Toluca with William Yarbrough in goal.

ENGLAND. American players did not figure in English FA Cup fifth round action as Tim Howard lost his starting spot at Everton to Joel Robles and Reading's injured Danny Williams returned to training for the first time in two weeks on Friday. Matt Miazga, the 20-year-old who joined Chelsea in January, was in the bench for its win over Manchester City.

"...Pulisic was replaced at halftime time by German international Marco Reus, who may have been rested for the first half because he suffered from a bad foul in the Porto game. Reus helped set up Aubameyang's 64th-minute gamewinner...." Really? It didn't have anything to do with him seeing little of the ball and squandering a chance = ineffective? Coaches pull ineffective players, and its the worst to be pulled at halftime. I just hope this doesn't mean he won't be seeing much of the field for a while.
