CCL: Dempsey magic still not enough for Sounders

Sigi Schmid's priorities for the Seattle Sounders in the first leg of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals were, in order, shut out Club America and win the game. The Sounders did neither, squandering two goals by Clint Dempsey and settling for a 2-2 tie. Still, Schmid saw enough good things to be optimistic about what shapes up to be a very difficult second leg at Azteca Stadium.

“History’s there for you to look at," Schmid said, "but history is also there to be broken. If we just looked at history and said, ‘Well, that’s the way it goes,’ then we might as well stay here and not get on the plane. We're getting on a plane. We're going down there to play and a win puts us through."

The Sounders certainly gave the crowd of 42,836 at CenturyLink Field -- a club record for the CCL -- plenty to cheer about, taking the lead twice on goals by Dempsey. But they showed their preseason form, conceding a second equalizer when the defense couldn't contain Oribe Peralta in the 69th minute and it had to hold off America to escape with a draw.

Dempsey appeared to send the Sounders into halftime with the lead on a curling free kick from more than 25 yards in the 43rd minute, but Darwin Quintero had the killer equalizer two minutes later when he scored on a breakaway.

“The goal that was more deflating was the first goal,” Schmid said. “If you take a lead right before halftime, you gotta go in with it at halftime. That’s just a rule. We were a little too aggressive, too open in the back at that point.”

Dempsey's second goal came on a header he put away from close range when he leaped above the America defense.

TRIVIA. Peralta and Quintero both have scored 21 goals in the Concacaf Champions League, tied for second place on the all-time list behind Javier Orozco with 25 goals. Dempsey's goals were his first two in the Concacaf Champions League.

And what about the overall team performance?

Pretty good game overall, Seattle lacked wide play in the first half, Morris and Valdez had no width, however dempseys role was unique where he would wander from flank to flank and was given free reign fro. Schmid. Morris' first touch needs some improvement, his physical presence helped, but again we need more crafty, technique, and tactical awareness from our forwards than physical presence. luckily for Seattle Dempsey provided that.
