, the German soccer federation (DFB) general secretary, quit ahead of the release of a report tying his organization to FIFA in connection with alleged dubious payments
surrounding the 2006 World Cup bid. The scandal also resulted in the resignation of Wolfgang Niersbach
as DFB president in November. Niersbach, who still serves on the FIFA executive committee,
is accused of knowing about and assisting in the making of payments used secure votes.
