Mexican players launch anti-homophobia campaign

Mexican national team players have finally spoken against fans who shout the homophobic slur "puto" when opposing goalkeepers take goal kicks.  Players including Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Rafael Marquez and Hector Moreno, read out a manifesto against abuse under the title "Embraced by Soccer."

"To us, differences are no obstacle. To us, we don't discriminate. To us, we respect everyone's opinion,” the players said in a YouTube and social media campaign.

While FIFA failed to take action against Mexican fans for the puto chant during the 2014 World Cup, FIFA fined Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Peru and Uruguay for homophobic chanting by fans during 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
