NEWSMAKER: Sigi Schmid

Three months after being dismissed as coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy, despite the team being first in the Western Conference, Sigi Schmid has been named head coach of the U.S. U-20 national team.

Schmid replaces Thomas Rongen, who left the U-20 position for the Chivas USA head-coaching job. Schmid's first task will be to prepare the team for the Jan. 12-16 qualifying tournament for the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, which will be held in the Netherlands in June 10-July 2.

Schmid, 51, previously coached the U-20s in 1998-99, guiding them to the round of 16 at the 1999 World Youth Championships in Nigeria. He had been coach of the Galaxy since 1999 and won the 2002 MLS title. He previously coached UCLA (1980-99), where he won three NCAA titles. He also served as assistant coach of the 1994 U.S. World Cup team.
