What They're Saying: Carli Lloyd

"I have scored some big-time goals. I've done well in Algarve Cups. I've done well in World Cup and Olympic qualifiers, Olympics. In big games when we're playing top-five teams. But yet you never see my face or my name out there. And it has frustrated me my entire career."

-- U.S. women's national team co-captain Carli Lloyd on being overlooked until the 2015 Women's World Cup final when her hat trick in the first 16 minutes against Japan made her, according to U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati, a "new hero" to generations of fans. (ESPNW)

"Even within our own federation, she hasn't been pushed to the forefront," the source says. "That says a lot in terms of what we valued." It's very clear what's being valued and contribution on the field is only part of it. Look at the team pics: http://www.ussoccer.com/womens-national-team/latest-roster#tab-1 Why do they all need to be primped and painted up? That's a US Soccer decision OR there is pressure on the women to do this for marketing appeal. Either way, the guys on the MNT are lucky don't have to get all dolled up to sell shirts.

"But yet you never see my face or my name out there." We get that you're a grownup and don't want to make a complete arse of yourself on social media, but in this day and age it's very difficult to break through with an appropriate message. We've seen 2 different images of you since the world cup, both boring: you, standing around trying to avoid Ronaldo at that awards ceremony, and the Heineken commercial. *yawn*. Let's do a little word association: : Morgan B., Tobin H, Julie J.: Names I recognize but know nothing about. Alex M, Christen P: Pin-ups. Mallory P: Phenom. Hope S: Beast between the sticks/Trainwreck. Meghan K: Perky sprite. Ali K: Bundesliga vet. Sydney L: Dom D. Megan R: good soccer IQ. Abby: mouthy soul of the team. Right now you're known for the world cup hat trick, not as a defined personality. There's no crime in that, but don't be surprised when the typical fan on the street draws a blank when asked to describe you.
