MLS Moves: Former U-20 star Steffen joins Crew

Zack Steffen, who starred for the USA at the 2015 Under-20 World Cup, signed with the Columbus Crew as a Discovery Player following his transfer from German club Freiburg. The 21-year-old goalkeeper had signed with Freiburg after his second season at Maryland in 2014 but was limited to 14 appearances with Freiburg II in the fourth-level Regionalliga.

Steffen led the USA to the quarterfinals of the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand. A penalty save preserved a 1-0 win over Colombia in the round of 16. Against eventual champion in the quarterfinals, Steffen made two saves in the shootout when a Serbia goal would have ended the game. Serbia won the nine-round shootout, 6-5. Steffen started the first two games in Olympic qualifying tournament before giving way to Ethan Horvath.

Steffen, who will compete with three-year goalkeeper Steve Clark for the starting job, joins the 2015 MLS runner-up, which has slumped badly this season. A 2-2 tie with Orlando City extended the Crew's winless streak to eight games. It has not won since May 28, falling into ninth place in the Eastern Conference with the second worst record in MLS.

“Zack is a talented goalkeeper with great potential and someone who has performed on the biggest stages for the United States youth national teams,” said Crew sporting director and head coach Gregg Berhalter in a statement. “We believe he has a bright future and we look forward to working with him.”
