MLS Moves: 'Flaco' returns to Sounders

"Flaco" was in Seattle from 2010-2012, scoring 13 goals in 55 MLS regular-season matches. He won Open Cup titles with the Sounders in 2010 an 2011.
"It's always great to bring back members of the Sounders family, and Alvaro is a player who knows the organization very well and can instantly come in and contribute to this team," said Sounders FC general manager and president of soccer Garth Lagerwey. "Paired with yesterday's signing of Nicolas Lodeiro, we think we've added two players who immediately make our team better on the field."
Fernandez, who has been capped 12 times by Uruguay, made four appearances at the 2010 World Cup, where the Celeste finished fourth. He left Chicago after the 2012 season and has played for Al Rayyan in Qatar, Nacional in Uruguay and Gimnasia y Esgrima of the Argentine first division, where he has five goals in 57 league appearances.
The signings of Fernandez and Lodeiro come the same week the Sounders fired head coach Sigi Schmid. Assistant Brian Schmetzer was named interim head coach.
