CCL: Valeri rescues Timbers, Red Bulls romp

Diego Valeri scored in the 90th minute to rescue the Portland Timbers and give them a 2-1 victory over CD Dragon of El Salvador in their opening game of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League in front of 16,268 fans.

Kenroy Howell stunned the Portland crowd, evening the score in the 76th minute, but Valeri won the game when he headed a Lucas Melano pass off the crossbar and scored on his own rebound.

The New York Red Bulls eased past Guatemala's Antigua, 3-0, in a match that saw them play a club record five Homegrown players, including Alex Muyl, who scored the second goal. Muyl, the only rookie who started, was also involved the first goal, an own goal on a shot he took that deflected off of defender Fabian Castillo.
