MLS Moves: Davies follows Bedoya to Philly

The Boston College buddies are back. In Philly.

A series of aggressive moves has brought former Eagles Charlie Davies and Alejandro Bedoya, who initially spurned MLS offers to ply their trade in Europe, to the Union roster.

A deal for Bedoya, 29, that involved a trade with Chicago, which held top spot in the MLS allocation order, as well as a transfer from French club Nantes was announced Tuesday. On Thursday the Union confirmed it has also secured Davies, 30, in a trade with New England.

In both deals the Union swapped General Allocation Money, Targeted Allocation Money and a SuperDraft pick for the players. In the case of Davies, the Revs received the Union’s first-round selection in the 2018 SuperDraft. Philly had traded its 2017 first-round pick to Chicago in the Bedoya deal.

“Charlie adds another dynamic dimension to our attack and is exactly the type of player we targeted during this window,” said Union sporting director Earnie Stewart in a team statement. “We’re thrilled to be able to add another player of quality and look forward to welcoming him to the club.”

Since signing with the Revs in August, 2013, Davies played 64 games (41 starts), scored 14 goals, and logged eight assists. He scored five goals in five games during New England’s postseason run to the 2014 MLS Cup, which it lost to the Galaxy, 2-1. In his first MLS stint he scored 11 goals in 2011 for D.C. United, which declined to re-sign him and prompted a move back to Europe, where he started his pro career with Swedish club Hammarby after three seasons at Boston College.

Bedoya met Davies at BC but they didn’t play together. By the time Bedoya, a transfer from Farliegh Dickinson, started playing for the Eagles in late summer of 2007, Davies had embarked on a star-crossed pro career. But Bedoya later followed in Davies' footsteps and began his pro career in Sweden.

Davies' battle with cancer follows a long rehabilitation from near-fatal injuries suffered in an auto accident nearly seven years ago. New England signed him after attempts to revive his career in Europe fizzled out. Head coach Jay Heaps offered him a chance. He took it.

“I’m blown away by the support I’ve received from Revolution fans and from my teammates,” said Davies, who announced last week he’d been undergoing treatment for a rare form of cancer, liposarcoma, and the disease was in remission.

“It’s been an honor to be part of such a wonderful and welcoming locker room and I leave with incredible friendships. I also am grateful to the Krafts [family that owns the Revolution] for the opportunity and for all their support. I’m excited for the next chapter in my career and look forward to joining the Union.”
