What They're Saying: Hope Solo

"I don't wish it on anybody. Being a goalkeeper is extremely difficult. But I've been around long enough to know that these things do happen, they've happened to me before. You just hope that they happen few and far between."

The second shot by Usme was beautiful. Nobody's saving that one.

Best female keeper in the world. Stuff happens. I hated to see a goal scored against the US but the second one on the direct was a thing of beauty.

If you want to be picky the two fouls that created the two goal scoring opportunities were really dumb.

Play on we will win the whole thing.

The goalkeeper--on such an angled free-kick, should have properly positioned herself at least a yard back closer to the back post. Solo is hovering left of center and actually shuffles more toward near-post after the ball is struck. Poor reading of the situation as well. There were no Colombian players interfering with her space, so for someone with a relatively long reach, this should have been tapped safely over the bar.

This article is so stupid, name me a goalkeeper or a players that has never made a mistake? Players make mistakes all the time, the only difference is that goalkeepers are in the spotlight when someone scores.

Hope's quote is honest and it is good to hear how she handles the pressure of being a goalie and having the expectation to perform perfectly all the time. Of course the goalie is where the buck stops. All field player errors pale in comparison to the smallest mistake made by a goalie. We used to tell the goalie, remember the ball has to get past 10 players before it gets to you. I watched the Honduran wall vs Argentina today and saw the men turning sideways allowing a goal to be scored. This is what goalies have to put up with all the time. Hardly anyone notices the cowering wall but all will remember the poor bloke standing in goal the moment the ball hits the net. Should Hope have made the saves, of course. If I were here trainer I serve her 50 balls the same way and have her make the saves 50 times to prove to her that she has not lost her touch.
