U.S. Abroad: Gooch makes EPL debut

Only one American played on the opening day of the English Premier League, and it was the most unlikely player. Californian Lynden Gooch, 20, made his EPL debut with the start for Sunderland, which gave Manchester City a scare in Pep Guardiola's debut as City manager before falling, 2-1.

MEXICO. Michael Orozco started and Paul Arriola came off the bench for Tijuana, which beat Leon, 2-0, for its fourth win in five games. Xolos are tied with Omar Gonzalez's Pachuca with 12 points ahead five games. Luis Silva dressed for Tigres for the first time since joining the Monterrey club in January.

SPAIN. Mukwelle Akale, 19, made his first-team debut for Villarreal, playing the last 30 minutes of its preseason match, a 3-2 loss to Leganes. Akale joined Villarreal's Juvenil A two seasons ago and helped it win its regional league title twice. He debuted for third-level Villarreal B last month.
