What They're Saying: Bruce Arena

“It’s going to be a thrill to be back there. Also awkward. Because I keep thinking that maybe Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle and all those guys wouldn’t be happy that there’s a soccer game going on there.”

-- LA Galaxy coach Bruce Arena on taking his MLS team to Yankee Stadium to face New York City FC. Speaking as lifelong New York Yankees fan, he said it makes no sense to play soccer at Yankee Stadium and he can't wait for NYCFC to get its own soccer stadium.  (Los Angeles Times)

Good for you Bruce. Tell it like it is.

If it makes no sense playing there, then why are they? Is there a better option now? It's hard to watch the game on TV there. After all these years and venues we've had to play in, I've grown rather particular about standards. The acceptance of turf is sacrilege too. Like Bruce I'm a big baseball fan, St. Louis, but while playing games in Busch I never worried or gave second thoughts to the Gas House Gang and other Cardinal immortals. I believe several years ago soccer surpassed baseball in participant numbers. Gone are the days where we should be accepting less than optimum playing venues and surfaces. All new franchises should be required to be soccer specific and grass.
