Rio Olympics: Germany vs. Sweden, Neid vs. Sundhage

Sweden pulled off upsets in outlasting the USA and Brazil in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the women's soccer competition at the Rio Olympics, but Pia Sundhage's gals will be decided underdogs in the gold-medal match against Germany in what will be the final meeting between Sundhage and German Silvia Neid.

Germany vs. Sweden, Women's Soccer:
2015: Women's World Cup: Germany 4-1 (round of 16)
2013: European Championship: Germany 1-0 (semifinals)
2008: Olympics: Germany 2-0 (quarterfinals)
2004: Olympics: Germany 1-0 (bronze-medal game)
2003: Women's World Cup: Germany 1-0 (final)
2001: European Championship: Germany 3-1 (group stage)
2001: European Championship: Germany 1-0 (final)
2000: Olympics: Germany 1-0 (group stage)
1995: European Championship: Sweden 3-2 (group stage)
1991: Women's World Cup: Sweden 4-0 (third-place game)

Neid, who is retiring after the Olympics to become a scout, won three European Championships as a player (1989, 1991, 1995) and coached Germany to the Women's World Cup title in 2007 ans European titles in 2009 and 2013.

Sundhage led the USA to Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012.

Goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl blocked Andressa's shot, and Lisa Dahlkvist scored the winner for Sweden, just as she did against the USA.

"It's not for me to criticize an opponent as their strategy worked," said Brazil coach Vadao of the Swedish tactics, "and they had good results in both matches against us and the USA."

Brazil started off the Olympics with a 3-0 win over China and 5-1 victory over Sweden, but it didn't score a goal after that, playing three scoreless draws.

Germany set up the first all-European gold-medal game as it reversed a 2-1 loss to Canada in their final group game with a 2-0 win on goals by Melanie Behringer from the penalty spot and Sara Dabritz.

The irony: Brazil women scored 8 goals in first two games (4 GPG) while the men team scored no goals in their first two games. The press turned against Neymar and praised Marta as the true number 10 player for Brazil. Since then, the women stopped scoring (in three games) while the men scored 12 goals in three games (4 GPG). I wonder what the final game for each team will hold for Brazil.

uh, women already lost, Gus...DFB, as always, scrape through to the knock-out round, then start spiel for real......we lose a lot of these only because we are in more than anyone else, price you pay..4+2> 5....

Robert, I know they lost. I watched the game. But they will play the bronze medal game today.
