Crowd Count: Palmetto Cup draws 6,892 in Columbia

No. 6 Clemson, the 2015 NCAA Division I men's runner-up, opened its 2016 campaign with a 2-1 win at South Carolina in their annual Palmetto Cup match that drew 6,892 fans at Stone Stadium, the largest ever crowd in venue history.

Austen Burnikel opened the scoring for the Tigers in the 14th minute, but South Carolina responded just 59 seconds later on Kevin Walker's header. The winner was scored by Aaron Jones on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 27th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ximo Miralles provided two big saves early in the second half, including a stop on Bjorn Gudjonsson's breakaway.

"Obviously, we are very happy with winning the match and getting the point in the Palmetto Cup," said Clemson coach Mike Noonan. "I think our team showed a toughness and edge to compete and credit to a good South Carolina team."
