BYU struggled for goals in its first two games, splitting against Washington State and Nebraska, but Ashley Hatch
scored a hat trick to give No. 13 BYU a 3-2 win at No. 5 Penn State, the
defending national champion.
The Cougars won at Washington State, 2-1, in overtime and were shut out by Nebraska, but Hatch needed less than six minutes to score against Penn State,
taking a through ball from Elena Medeiros
In the 57th minute, Nadia Gomes
set up Hatch, who scored on a chip. But Penn State rallied for goals by Frannie Crouse
to pull even less than 10 minutes later.
Hatch, who scored both goals at Washington State, put the Cougars back ahead and completed her second career hat trick
off a cross from Gomes in the 77th minute. She pushed her career goal total to 33, seventh all-time at BYU.
Penn State almost tied the score a second time in the final minute when a shot
by Laura Freigang
hit the crossbar.
"Coming off some great practices this week, it was an incredible performance against an excellent program," BYU head coach Jennifer
said. "We played our game right from the beginning and were rewarded for it.” FRIDAY: Other Top 25 Action:
