U.S. Abroad: Americans battle for top spot in Mexico

Michael Orozco started and Paul Arriola was a late sub as Tijuana beat UNAM, 1-0, to open up a three-point lead at the top of Mexico's Liga MX, ahead of Omar Gonzalez's Pachuca and Jose Torres' Tigres. Orozco, Arriola and Gonzalez were the three Liga MX call-ups to the U.S. national team for its September qualifiers.

The start is quite a turnaround for Xolos, which finished 17th and 14th in the two phases of the 18-team Liga MX in 2015-16 and put itself in relegation danger if its fortunes didn't improve.

GERMANY. John Brooks (Hertha Berlin)  started and Timmy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt)  and  Fabian Johnson  (Borussia Moenchengladbach) came off the bench in winning efforts on the Bundesliga's opening day, and Bobby Wood scored in his first division debut in Hamburg's 1-1 tie with FC Ingolstadt. Christian Pulisic dressed but did not play in Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 win over Mainz.
